Named after the city of Tequila in Mexico, Tequila is a distilled beverage that people have made songs about and now there is a national day of celebration for it. A distilled spirit from the agave plant, tequila is produced only in certain Mexican regions. However, it is enjoyed across the world.

Tequila is distilled from fermented juice from Weber blue agave plants (Agave tequilana). It looks like a giant aloe vera plant with spiked barbs at the tips and apparently it belongs to the lily family. After seven to ten years of growth when the agave plant reaches maturity, it can then be harvested. The fermented juice of the agave plant is then distilled in either pot stills or column stills, often twice the time as wine to produce tequila. It may then be aged in barrels or tanks for a short period, or be filtered or blended, depending on the style. Further, water is added to the distillate before bottling in order to obtain the bottling strength, after which it is ready to be consumed or mixed with various cocktails and recipes.
